About The Position

The Assistant Childcare Teacher is a part-time position under the supervision of the Childcare Teacher and is responsible for assisting with the planning, development and implementation of all classroom activities. The Assistant Childcare Teacher will have specific assignments that provide for the children’s social, physical, intellectual and emotional growth and will also work in any support role necessary for the operation of the childcare program.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED)
  • Meet DCFS qualifications
  • Ability to work and communicate well in writing and verbally with the children, Childcare Teacher, Childcare Supervisor, and parents of the participants
  • Documentation of physical exam and TB skin test is required before beginning work
  • Current CPR and first aid certification is required

Responsibilities

  • Will work with other teachers and assistant teachers cooperatively and as a team, sharing all necessary functions in the classroom.
  • Develop and implement small group activities that include but are not limited to music, games, art, science and reading.
  • Maintain at all times the confidentiality of the parents, their children and program operations.
  • Responsible for the safety and supervision of the children at all times.
  • Understand and implement emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Responsible for daily record keeping and adherence to all requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of the children’s progress reports and portfolio files.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings (minimum of 15 hours per calendar year for DCFS).
  • Support the childcare program, its goals and trainings.
  • Assume equal share of housekeeping and kitchen duties to ensure a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude at all times.
  • Diaper changing as needed following DCFS guidelines and requirements.
  • Maintain good attendance.
  • Give the Childcare Director a two-week notice on expected absences or requested time-off, submitting request of leave forms for all time off.
  • Arrive for assigned shift well groomed and following the District dress code.
  • Attendance at staff meetings and trainings is mandatory, unless approved by the Childcare Supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers through oral and written communications.
  • Respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mails, comments and suggestions in a timely manner.
  • Promote District to patrons, guests, and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 30 pounds or less.
  • Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
  • Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
  • Must work closely with co-workers and the general public.
  • Experiences ongoing concerns for all safety and liability issues.
  • Must have ability to deal with other people and children under stressful situations.
  • The Assistant Childcare Teacher may also have to work under stressful situations when First Aid or CPR are required.
  • If offered the position, the applicant will be required to complete the District’s Employment Application and successfully pass a physical examination, drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Lifting is occasional, usually 30 pounds or less.
  • May need to respond to situations quickly and accurately.
  • Daily tasks may vary, but involve significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, some climbing, balancing, and frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • May need to dress children and/or change diapers.
  • Assist in preparing food for children and serve meals and refreshments.
  • May need to instruct children in eating, resting and toilet habits.
  • May be exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Most work is performed indoors.
  • Time frame may differentiate due to parent tardiness, quantity of children, and family emergencies.
  • Environment conditions may differentiate day to day.
  • Must be aware of the safety and liability consideration of the District operations.
