About The Position

The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of NC through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in NC. The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees. The Aviation Division of the NC Forest Service operates three hubs: Kenansville, Sanford, and Hickory and a centralized aviation maintenance facility at the Raleigh Exec (Sanford) Airport in Lee County. The Primary purpose of this position is total program responsibility for the aviation program in a designated area of the State of North Carolina. This position conducts supervisory and administrative work in managing and coordinating the flight operations and maintenance of a variety of multiple missions including patrol, search and rescue, forest fire suppression, forest management and other flights as assigned. The position provides vital staff support to the Director of Aviation/Chief Pilot. The position is also responsible for piloting rotor wing or fixed wing aircraft as assigned. Residency requirement discussed at time of interview. Duty station location: Duplin Hangar 212 Airport Road Kenansville, NC 28349

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Federal Aviation Administration and Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations, and State Statutes governing the operation and maintenance of aircraft.
  • Knowledge of air navigation and of single and multi-engine fixed wing and/or rotary wing aircraft capabilities and performances.
  • Knowledge of flight planning, meteorology, forest fire behavior, firefighting techniques, and aircraft maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to pilot single and multi-engine fixed wing and/or rotary wing aircraft in most weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of pilots and aircraft mechanics and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and a minimum of 1500 hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission, along with a minimum of five years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft and possession of a FAA Class II Medical Certificate.
  • May also require ratings in multi-engine (land), instrument flying, and others as designated.
