About The Position

Albemarle County is seeking an experienced and collaborative finance leader to serve as its next Assistant Chief Financial Officer. This position plays a critical leadership role within the Department of Finance and Budget and serves as a key partner in ensuring the County's financial integrity, operational excellence, and commitment to exceptional public service. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant CFO is responsible for operational oversight and strategic leadership over a portfolio of Department of Finance and Budget offices including the Controller, Grants & Agreements, Management & Budget, Procurement, Real Estate, Revenue Administration, Insurance Programs & Shared Services, and Investment & Debt Management, as assigned The position may serve as Acting CFO in the absence of the CFO. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished financial professional with experience leading complex work groups, developing high-performing teams, and communicating effectively with elected officials, executive leadership, employees, and the public. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong technical expertise in governmental finance, strategic problem solving, and organizational leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Economics, Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field.
  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in public administration, budget development, financial, audit, or business management, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of management experience leading staff, addressing complex organizational issues, presenting to governing bodies or executive leadership, and leading significant projects or strategic initiatives.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the County's driver eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certification such as CPA, CGFM, CPFO, CMA, or similar credential.
  • Experience in local government finance, budgeting, accounting, auditing, treasury management, grants administration, or financial operations.
  • Experience presenting complex financial information to elected officials, executive leadership, and community stakeholders.
  • Experience leading organizational change, process improvement initiatives, and cross-functional projects.

Responsibilities
