About The Position

The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and performance of building systems within a critical facilities environment. This role supervises operating engineers and maintenance staff while ensuring all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, fire/life safety, and emergency systems operate safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to building occupants. The Assistant Chief Engineer serves as a key leader for the engineering team, helping maintain operational excellence, supporting preventative maintenance programs, overseeing contractor activities, and assisting the Chief Engineer in achieving reliability, safety, and uptime goals. This position also assumes Chief Engineer responsibilities when the Chief Engineer is not on site.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of related experience in building operations, maintenance, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, or similar skilled trades.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience within an engineering, maintenance, or facilities environment.
  • Universal CFC EPA certification or willingness to obtain certification within the first year with company support.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and safely work on ladders up to 30 feet in height.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Trade school education, union training, military service, or college coursework related to engineering or building operations.
  • Experience working in critical environments such as clean rooms, laboratories, data centers, or secure facilities.
  • Familiarity with Daikin VRV, DOAS, and related HVAC systems.
  • Experience overseeing preventative maintenance programs and contractor management.
  • Knowledge of emergency escalation procedures and critical facility work authorization processes.
  • Understanding of building automation systems and energy management controls.
  • Experience maintaining inventory, ordering parts, and supporting operational budgeting processes.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct engineering and maintenance staff during assigned shifts while monitoring work quality, safety, and overall team performance.
  • Coordinate and perform preventative maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, and service requests for mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and critical infrastructure systems.
  • Monitor building operations including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, chilled water systems, boilers, pumps, ventilation equipment, and fire/life safety systems to ensure continuous operation.
  • Train and mentor engineering staff on maintenance procedures, troubleshooting techniques, workplace safety, and proper tool and equipment usage.
  • Oversee contractors and vendors performing work within the facility, ensuring compliance with building procedures, safety requirements, and critical work authorization processes.
  • Maintain engineering logs, system readings, maintenance records, inventory levels, and documentation related to equipment performance and building operations.
  • Support emergency response procedures, participate in on-call rotations, and assist with after-hours or weekend projects as needed.
