About The Position

The Office of the Capital Collateral Regional Counsel–Northern Region (CCRC-North) is a Florida state government agency that represents indigent Florida death row inmates in state and federal postconviction proceedings challenging the legality of their convictions and sentences. The attorney investigates, files, and litigates postconviction motions for relief in local circuit courts, appeals to the Florida Supreme Court, and petitions for writs of certiorari to the United States Supreme Court. The role also prepares, files, and litigates habeas corpus petitions in federal district courts, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. It offers litigation and appellate work as cases progress through the postconviction process, including opportunities to work with forensic experts on guilt- and penalty-phase issues. Cases are assigned to teams of attorneys and investigators. Attorneys work closely with their team, clients, witnesses, and experts to challenge convictions and sentences. Cases usually originate in North Florida, although conflict case appointments may arise from anywhere in Florida. Remote work, part-time, three-quarters-time, and contract arrangements will be considered.
