AAU - Assistant Basketball Coach
About The Position
Asphalt Green is seeking experienced and dependable AAU Assistant Basketball Coaches to support competitive youth basketball programming at Battery Park City. The AAU Assistant Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in developing players’ basketball skills, preparing athletes for competition, leading organized practices, supporting game-day performance, and creating a positive, disciplined, and respectful team culture. This role works closely with the Head Coach, Director of Player Development, players, parents, and program leadership to ensure athletes have a safe, structured, and development-focused experience. The ideal candidate has competitive basketball experience, prior coaching experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to follow team structure while supporting player growth both on and off the court. The AAU Assistant Basketball Coach plays an important role in supporting young athletes as they grow as players, teammates, and individuals. This role supports player development through skill-building, game understanding, discipline, sportsmanship, accountability, and teamwork. By working closely with the Head Coach and helping maintain a positive and structured team environment, the Assistant Coach helps athletes prepare for competition while building confidence, leadership, and a strong work ethic.
Requirements
- Prior coaching experience at the club, high school, or collegiate level.
- Competitive basketball playing experience at the club, high school, collegiate, or professional level.
- Deep understanding of basketball fundamentals, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to support game plans and adjust strategies during games.
- Experience with player development and skill progression.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to foster a positive, disciplined, respectful, and team-focused environment.
- Ability to supervise youth athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
- Ability to work two weekday evenings after 4:30 PM, one weekday afternoon, and select weekends for league play.
- Ability to attend required coaches meetings, trainings, and program events.
- Ability to become USA coaching certified upon hire, paid for by Asphalt Green.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice To Haves
- Prior AAU basketball coaching experience.
- Experience coaching youth athletes in a competitive team environment.
- Experience working under a Head Coach or supporting a coaching staff.
- Experience communicating with parents and families in a youth sports setting.
- Experience supporting travel teams, league play, tournaments, or competitive youth basketball programming.
- Strong practice support, player evaluation, and team management skills.
- CPR/AED or First Aid certification.
- Bilingual or multilingual language skills.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of players’ fundamental basketball skills and game understanding to prepare them for competition.
- Assist with organized, efficient, and purposeful practices that address individual and team needs.
- Reinforce basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, terminology, and game concepts.
- Support player development, skill progression, confidence, accountability, and work ethic.
- Assist with game plans and in-game adjustments that support player growth and team performance.
- Help athletes understand team expectations, systems, and standards.
- Foster a positive, disciplined, and respectful team culture.
- Emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, effort, accountability, and respect.
- Serve as a positive role model for players on and off the court.
- Encourage personal growth, leadership, and responsibility.
- Supervise player behavior and conduct during practices, games, travel, and team activities.
- Help ensure a safe, inclusive, and development-focused environment for all players.
- Work closely with the Head Coach to follow the structure set in place and support player safety and a positive team environment.
- Coordinate with the Director of Player Development to align systems, terminology, and expectations.
- Maintain clear and respectful communication with players, parents, coaching staff, and program directors.
- Attend coaches meetings, trainings, and other scheduled program events.
- Support and follow Asphalt Green program policies and procedures.
