Assistant Attorney General, General Civil Unit
About The Position
The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced civil litigation attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Trial Section’s General Civil Unit. This role offers the challenge and opportunity of public service, work-life balance, and an attractive compensation package. The position involves defending the Commonwealth of Virginia, its agencies, departments, officials, and employees in state and federal courts. Responsibilities include litigating cases ranging from personal injury torts to alleged violations of constitutional rights, conducting legal research, preparing pleadings, drafting briefs and legal memoranda, managing all aspects of discovery including e-discovery, motions practice, providing legal advice to clients, making court appearances, and handling trial and appellate work. Additionally, there is an opportunity for mentorship and close collaboration with other attorneys in the Unit. The role provides a variety of practice areas without repetitive daily tasks and offers significant in-court experience. Work-life balance is emphasized and encouraged.
Requirements
- Admission to the Virginia State Bar required.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in time management.
- Ability to manage a challenging caseload.

- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work closely with a team of dedicated attorneys and staff in a collegial environment.
Nice To Haves
- A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of civil litigation experience in federal or state court is preferred; similar litigation experience will be considered.
- Applicants at both junior and senior levels are sought, with junior levels having a minimum of at least three years of practice.
