About The Position
The Washington State Attorney General's Office (AGO) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General for the Social and Health Services (SHS) Section in the Spokane Division. This role involves representing the Department of Children, Youth and Families in juvenile welfare cases, including dependency, termination of parental rights, and licensing matters. The position is based in Spokane but may involve travel to nearby counties. The SHS Section is a team of legal professionals dedicated to public service and protecting vulnerable populations. Requirements
- Graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
- Licensed to practice law in Washington State (or actively pursuing admission).
- Expressed interest in the practice of public sector law.
- Strong desire to litigate on a regular basis.
- Strong writing and oral advocacy skills.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to handle a heavy caseload through multi-tasking in cases involving often difficult subject matter.
- Experience communicating or working with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Desire to promote a positive work environment based upon mutual respect and professionalism.
- Commitment to public service as demonstrated by background, talents, attitude, and enthusiasm for public law practice.
Nice To Haves
- A candidate who is interested in practicing independently in Eastern Washington counties outside of Spokane is preferred.
- Litigation experience or experience in juvenile law is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Appear in court weekly to litigate a high-volume, fast-paced caseload of juvenile welfare work, including dependency and termination of parental rights cases, and foster care and childcare licensing cases.
- Handle child welfare cases arising from allegations of child abuse or neglect.
- Serve as the immediate client representative for the Department of Children, Youth and Families.
- Conduct court hearings, motions, and trials.
- Meet with clients and communicate with various parties via email.
- Prepare for fact-finding and termination of parental rights trials.
- Handle appellate litigation arising from trials.
- Travel to courts in counties outside of Spokane as required.
- Assist coworkers as needed to ensure all client needs are met.
- Potentially experience other areas of law or change assignments based on attorney interest and team needs.
