About The Position

The Utah Attorney General's Office has a vacancy for an Assistant Attorney General to work in the Justice Division. The selected applicant will work in the SECURE Strike Force section. The human trafficking prosecutor works with the SECURE strike force to provide support to investigators and to prosecute human labor and sex trafficking, sex exploitation, racketeering and identity fraud cases throughout the state of Utah. This position requires excellent written and oral advocacy skills and the ability to try both jury and bench trials of a complicated nature. Preference will be given to candidates with criminal prosecution experience, an interest in criminal law, and experience in preparing for and trying complex criminal cases. The candidate must be a member in good standing with the Utah State Bar upon application. Travel may be required as the employee will need to represent the State in criminal trials and other legal proceedings throughout the State. This position has the potential for future cross-deputization as a SAUSA.

Requirements

  • A Juris Doctorate is required.
  • Minimum of 4 years practicing as an attorney, with a minimum of two of those years as a prosecutor.

  • read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures
  • speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally
  • knowledge of criminal processes and procedures

  • understand and apply case law and statutory law
  • perform legal research using appropriate techniques and systems
  • use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions
  • conduct plea negotiations and arrive at suitable terms when appropriate and advisable
  • make decisions or solve problems by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions
  • deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism
  • provide consultation and/or advice in team settings
  • knowledge of the Rules of Evidence
  • The candidate must be a member in good standing with the Utah State Bar upon application.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cases by conducting legal research and gathering evidence.
  • Appear in court for hearings and conduct pre-trial conferences and negotiate plea agreements.
  • Conduct jury trials, bench trials, evidentiary hearings, and preliminary hearings.
  • Provide consultation, make recommendations, give appropriate advice, and/or facilitate decisions.
  • Determine needs in discovery; participate in decision making and strategy sessions in preparing cases for court and determining evidence to be used.
  • Write or draft correspondence, reports, discovery, motions, documents and/or other written materials.
  • May be required to travel to various court locations and stay overnight.
