About The Position

Under general supervision, performs intermediate paraprofessional work in coordinating support operations for all league sports played on City recreation facilities. Work involves assisting in evaluating and coordinating athletic programs administered by the department; compiling and verifying rules with immediate supervisor; recommending and enforcing guidelines required of the program; inventorying, advising, and presenting to the department head required equipment for each sport offered through the department; and preparing required specifications to meet the need of franchise programs and department sponsored leagues.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by three to four years of experience in recreation work with considerable sports administration experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Must have at least two years of experience as a Head Playground Supervisor.
  • Must possess a valid Louisiana State Driver’s License.
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with Supervising department employees which involves such duties as instructing, assigning and reviewing work, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, appraising employee performance, discipline, termination and salary increases.
  • Assists with administering athletic programs such as football, basketball, track, softball, volleyball, soccer and baseball.
  • Coordinates and maintains the tournaments administered through the department.
  • Supervises and coordinates with subordinates to ensure necessary equipment is available for programs.
  • Performs public relations with coaches, parents, and participants.
  • Ensures all facilities are staffed and adjusts personnel as needed.
  • Assists in evaluating administered department programs; assists in preparing rules and schedules for the recreation programs and makes administrative decisions when questions arise.
  • Handles recommendations and public complaints relative to league play.
  • Interacts daily with supervisors on leagues and requested equipment to maintain the programs on the playgrounds.
  • Assists in selecting and supervising all coaches and ensures all children and coaches have proper identification.
  • Inventories, composes, and recommends essential equipment to provide and maintain programs that area administered through the department.
  • Assists in selecting the officials association and ensures that they are competent and abreast of all rules changes.
  • Provides and distributes all-star uniforms for franchise leagues as needed for each sport.
  • Monitors / supervises Recreation Office on a rotating basis.
  • Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as league rules, franchise guideline manuals, departmental information, schedules, rosters and catalogs.
  • Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as equipment request specifications and all-star needs.
  • Operates City vehicle and a variety of equipment and machinery such as pitching machines, electronic scoreboards, telephone system, copy machine, etc.
  • Uses a variety of tools such as microphones, scorebooks, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as chalk, down marker, bases, extension cords, general office supplies, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as immediate supervisor, Director of Parks and Recreation, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, Recreation staff, supervisors, parents, and the general public.
  • Assists with conducting supervisors’ meetings for each sport; delivers any office communications to supervisors.
  • Answers telephones as needed on a rotating basis at night.
  • Observes and evaluates programs administered through the department.
  • Travels to outside franchise tournaments as representative of the department.
  • Maintains scorebook for leagues in need of assistance.
  • Performs minor field maintenance such as raking, using the pitching machine, etc.
  • Performs general administrative / clerical duties as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, attending meetings, etc.
  • Performs other related work as required.
