About The Position

The Department of Urban and Environmental Studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Carnegie-classified R2 institution, is seeking outstanding applicants for two tenure-line positions in urban studies. These positions emphasize a commitment to inclusive excellence, the education of the whole person, and the building of a just society. LMU is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI), and a Black-Serving Institution (BSI). The successful candidates will embrace LMU's teacher-scholar model, which involves conducting research and creative work, teaching a diverse student body, mentoring students, participating in service, and promoting equity, inclusion, and belonging. The positions are tenure-line faculty appointments, with one candidate appointed at the Assistant Professor rank and the other at either Assistant or Associate Professor rank, depending on experience and qualifications. The start date for these positions is August 2027.

Requirements

Hold a Ph.D. in urban studies, planning, geography, or a closely related field by the position start date of August 2027.
ABD applicants who anticipate completion of the doctorate by August 2027 will also be considered.
Strong background in urban planning and/or urban geography.
Research and teaching that engage broader questions in contemporary urban studies.
Demonstrated commitment to LMU's teacher-scholar model.
Commitment to inclusive excellence, the education of the whole person, and the building of a just society.
Ability to address commitment to and contributions to advancing LMU's mission and promoting the success, sense of belonging, and thriving of students from a variety of lived experiences in application materials.

Specialization in one or more of the following areas: transportation and land use; community development; sustainable urbanism; the intersection of planning with racial and environmental justice; and urban systems and processes in the Global South.

Responsibilities

Maintain an active program of scholarship.
Teach and advise undergraduate students.
Contribute to department and university service.
Teach lower-division and upper-division courses in urban studies, including introductory, urban planning, and geography courses.
Contribute to the LMU Core Curriculum, potentially through a First-Year Seminar or courses incorporating engaged learning pedagogies.
Engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary, and community-engaged approaches to teaching and research.
Mentor a diverse student body in Los Angeles.
Contribute to LMU's teacher-scholar model through excellent undergraduate teaching, an active research agenda, and innovative forms of student engagement, including collaborative and community-based learning.
