About The Position

The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) Assistant Animal Care Manager supervises the animal care section and manages day-to-day animal care to ensure compliance at all sites with the Animal Welfare Act, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) Policy, and Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards. The role requires excellent communication skills and an understanding of the basic workings of a laboratory animal facility. This is an essential, full-time, FLSA non-exempt appointment. The employee may be required to report to or remain at work during emergencies when classes are canceled or campus operations are limited. Evening and weekend work will be required at times. The position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly, in addition to base salary. The job posting does not specify the base salary range.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher), or four years of full-time experience working in an animal-related field in lieu of a degree.
Experience working in an animal research facility.
Experience caring for major laboratory animal species.
Supervisory experience.
Must obtain, keep, and maintain an appropriate valid New York State driver’s license and have a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
Excellent communication skills and an understanding of the basic workings of a laboratory animal facility.
Ability to work evenings and weekends at times.

AALAS certification in laboratory animal facility management (CMAR or ILAM).

Responsibilities

Directly supervise the animal care section in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.
Assist with overseeing and ensuring staff compliance with DLAR standard operating procedures and policies.
Assist with overseeing and ensuring proper on-the-job training for animal care workers.
Drive animals and transport supplies and equipment between campus facilities.
Order animal-related supplies required for daily animal care.
Assist in preparing program descriptions required by AAALAC before site visits.
Assist with documentation for inspections by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and New York State Public Health.
Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
