About The Position

The Assignment Editor works on NBC News’ Network News Desk as part of a shift-based team, collaborating with bureaus on domestic news coverage. The role provides editorial and logistical support across broadcast, cable, digital, and streaming platforms. It involves coordinating newsgathering and coverage, supporting breaking and ongoing stories, and working with editorial, technical, operational, and platform teams to meet coverage and on-air needs.

Requirements

At least 3 years of editorial production experience at a network, cable, or digital outlet.
Proficiency with newsroom systems and social media outlets.
Solid working knowledge of TV production, affiliates, and satellite operations.
Strong news judgment and communication skills.
Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and overnights, under tight deadline pressure and occasionally with little or no warning.
Must be a team player; collaboration is essential.
Strong knowledge of and interest in news and current events.
Must be willing to work in New York, NY.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the gathering and feeding of news materials.
Research and implement coverage of breaking news and ongoing stories, and quickly assess coverage needs as breaking news develops.
Collaborate with NBC News digital, streaming, and broadcast platforms on newsgathering, social media initiatives, and content distribution.
Communicate with Legal, Standards, R&C, and other groups to obtain and distribute appropriate editorial and usage guidance.
Use data to inform and evolve newsgathering, storytelling, and audience engagement.
Initiate and maintain communication with affiliates and News Channel counterparts.
Use and monitor social media sites and the web.
Facilitate and manage requests from platforms for field teams on assignment.
Participate in daily network-wide conferences.
Establish and maintain working story and contact files.
Monitor competing broadcast, cable, and digital platforms.
Develop story coverage plans and layouts with management oversight.
Work with Network and NBC News Now teams to accommodate on-air needs, including breaking news and correspondent requests.
Coordinate resource management with technical and operations staff.
