About The Position

FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S., including stations in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas. These stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. FOX 32 News is seeking a key player to fill the vital role of Assignment Editor in their busy newsroom. This position acts as the central coordinator, managing emails, phones, social media, and police scanners. The Assignment Editor is responsible for coordinating and directing news crews, ensuring they cover the most important stories in the community for both digital and broadcast platforms. The role requires excellent communication skills to accurately and quickly deliver information to producers, reporters, photographers, and news managers. The ideal candidate is a positive individual with a winning attitude, eager to break news stories ahead of the competition.

Requirements

  • Must have a Journalism or communication degree or related experience
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Understand how to use current news gathering tools for both broadcast and digital platforms
  • Organized
  • Able to prioritize assignments to maximize staff output
  • Able to multi-task
  • Able to think logistically
  • Must work well under pressure and stay calm in breaking news situations
  • Strong communication skills

  • Commitment to the highest standards of journalism

Nice To Haves

  • Previous assignment desk, associate producer or news internship experience
  • Experience with newsroom software such as iNews, Slack, and video editing

Responsibilities

  • Guiding news coverage on digital and broadcast platforms during your assigned shift
  • Understand how to create and construct compelling and impactful news content
  • Handle ENG and news crew deployment
  • Coordinate live crew assignments
  • Use social media, the internet and other emerging technologies to generate news stories and news contacts
  • Curate content for web and assign resources for a digital platform
  • Assist the news producers with story research
  • Monitor police and fire scanners and e-mail for potential news stories
  • Other duties as assigned
