About The Position

FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S., including stations in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas. These stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. FOX 32 News is hiring a key player to fill the vital role of Assignment Editor in its busy newsroom. This position involves juggling emails, phones, social media, and police scanners, and coordinating and directing news crews to cover the most important stories for both digital and broadcast platforms. The Assignment Editor is the communication expert responsible for delivering information accurately and quickly to producers, reporters, photographers, and news managers. The ideal candidate is a positive individual with a winning attitude, eager to beat the competition to the latest news story.

Requirements

  • Journalism or communication degree or related experience
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Understanding how to use current news gathering tools for both broadcast and digital platforms
  • Organized and able to prioritize assignments to maximize staff output
  • Able to multi-task and think logistically
  • Able to work well under pressure and stay calm in breaking news situations
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong writing skills
  • Commitment to the highest standards of journalism
  • Ability to work weekends and an occasional holiday shift

  • Experience with newsroom software such as iNews

Responsibilities

  • Guiding news coverage on digital and broadcast platforms during your assigned shift
  • Understanding how to create and construct compelling and impactful news content
  • Handling ENG and news crew deployment
  • Coordinating live crew assignments
  • Using social media, the internet, and other emerging technologies to generate news stories and news contacts
  • Curating content for web and assigning resources for a digital platform
  • Assisting news producers with story research
  • Monitoring police and fire scanners and e-mail for potential news stories
  • Other duties as assigned
