About The Position

The focus of the Assessor is to determine whether a child is at risk as defined in the applicable legislation. The Assessor will determine how to proceed with a case, determine risk to the child and the need for more intrusive action in cases known to be dangerous or involving sexual abuse, and identify unmet needs and appropriate service providers and other resources, including extended family. The Assessor will also recommend the status to be pursued, including recommending the opening or closing of an investigation, and will take necessary action in accordance with Authority policies and procedures. Consequences of actions taken have life impacting implications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Social Work degree, Bachelor of Arts degree in a related human services field, or Social Work or Child and Youth Care diploma; equivalent additional education or experience may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of the Blackfoot Language is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the applicable child welfare legislation and policies which govern actions and provide legal authorities, Child Welfare Protocols, and regional directives.
  • Must undergo a Child Welfare Information System check and a Criminal Record check.
  • A valid Driver's Licence and vehicle are required.
  • Confidentiality is a necessity.

Responsibilities

  • Collect information through contacts and personal interviews with the children, parents, and significant others to determine the nature and degree of risk to the child.
  • Collect and analyze information to identify the child's unmet needs, and the strengths and weaknesses of the home or family environment and options for dealing with the child.
  • Assess whether the child is at risk and whether the family can adequately protect the child.
  • Determine, as the end result of the assessment, whether to open or close a file and process related paperwork.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of the client's situation in developing or amending the service plan.
  • Execute removal or apprehension of a child if required.
  • Prepare and present all documentation necessary to obtain status.
  • Attend trial to prepare and present evidence.
  • Stabilize the case before transfer to case management.
  • Provide a smooth transition for the child and family from investigation to case management.
  • Educate community members, including other professionals, about the child welfare role, applicable legislation, and other community resources.
  • Liaise with community and department/government resources for referral and information sharing and gathering.
  • Liaise with school counsellors, teachers, and psychologists to collect information with a view to resolving the problem.
  • Liaise with medical and hospital personnel to gather information.
  • Liaise with the child and the family of the child to collect information for assessment purposes.
  • Liaise with law enforcement officials, lawyers including department lawyers, and probation officers.
  • Liaise with the intake worker to clarify intake information.
  • Liaise with culturally specific resources, such as band consultation.
  • Liaise with previous workers of the child.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, including contact notes and service plans.
