About The Position

Thorlabs is seeking an Assembly Trainer to play a crucial role in advancing science through the design and manufacture of photonics components, instruments, and systems. This position is responsible for training new hires on fundamental assembly skills, as well as existing staff on new techniques, corrective actions, and skill matrix expansion. The trainer will also assist with assembly tasks as needed. The role operates under general supervision and may require travel to other Thorlabs locations, though the primary location is Newton, NJ.

Requirements

Minimum 3 years of MBU assembly experience
High School diploma or equivalent
Strong attention to detail
Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
Strong ability to teach and mentor
Must be able to understand written work instructions for a wide range of products.
Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments.
Ability to grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small.
Ability to lift or move objects up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

Train new hires on fundamental assembly skills.
Train existing staff on new techniques, corrective actions, and skill matrix expansion.
Assist with assembly tasks as needed, at the discretion of the manager.
Understand written work instructions for a wide range of products to properly assemble the final product to the highest quality standards with zero scrap or rework.
Train assemblers to meet expected assembly timelines outlined on production orders.
Assess skill acquisition and help overcome learning hurdles.
Develop effective and fast teaching methods.
Serve as a mentor to new employees in assembly and answer questions.
Convey the Thorlabs Brand and Customer Centric workplace.
Cross-train on various functions to provide flexibility and support across production operations.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies, and regulations.
Meet company standards for quantity and quality of work.
Adhere to company policies, procedures, and directives regarding workplace behavior.
