Assembly Technician - Robot Hands

1X•San Carlos, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The Assembly Technician on the Hands team builds precision electromechanical subassemblies for NEO, 1X’s humanoid robot. The role involves assembling miniature components—including motors, encoders, PCBs, and harnesses—to demanding specifications and micron-level tolerances. Work must meet strict quality standards because these assemblies support a robot intended to operate safely in people’s homes. Technicians own their station’s output, uptime, and conformance while meeting shift production targets. They identify and document defects, process deviations, and material issues before they move downstream, maintain accurate build and inspection records, and contribute to continuous improvement in coordination with engineering and the opposite shift. The position is based in San Carlos and offers a day shift or swing shift.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in precision electromechanical assembly, micro assembly, or similar fine-component manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience assembling miniature components such as small motors, gearboxes, encoders, PCBs, and fine-pitch connectors.
  • Proficiency with precision hand tools, calibrated low-value torque instruments (approximately 1 Nm), and dimensional inspection tools such as micrometers, pin gauges, dial indicators, or calipers.
  • Working knowledge of ESD handling procedures and controlled-environment protocols.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work scheduled shifts consistently in a team environment.
  • Professional-level written and verbal English proficiency.
  • Ability to perform fine-detail work while sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Sufficient corrected or uncorrected vision to inspect miniature components and read fine markings at close range.

Nice To Haves

  • MES or ERP experience, such as Odoo or SAP, for production tracking and work-order management.
  • Background in robotic, actuator, gearbox, or servo assembly.
  • Soldering experience, including through-hole soldering or SMT rework.
  • Familiarity with thermal compounds or adhesives such as Loctite, and comfort working near thermal processing equipment.
  • Experience with vision inspection systems or digital measurement tools.
  • Experience flashing firmware or programming embedded components.
  • Experience functionally testing PCBs, small motors, or encoders, including continuity checks, run-in, or performance validation.
  • Lean manufacturing, 5S, or continuous improvement experience.

Responsibilities

  • Build precision hand subassemblies to specification, including work involving micron-level tolerances, sub-M2 fasteners, ESD-sensitive components, and fine-pitch connectors.
  • Meet shift production targets while maintaining quality, station output, uptime, and conformance.
  • Identify and document defects, process deviations, and material issues at the workstation before they reach the next station.
  • Maintain complete and accurate build logs and inspection data for every unit handled.
  • Surface production-line issues, propose fixes, and partner with engineering and the opposite shift on continuous improvement.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave.
  • 401(k) plan with company match: 100% on the first 3% of contributions and 50% on the next 2%.
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA) options.
  • Commuter benefits for transit and parking.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance and life insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for mental health, financial, and personal support.
