Assembly Technician - Fiber Optics

About The Position

This role involves assembling electro-mechanical products, subassemblies, wiring harnesses, and components. The technician will perform fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing, as well as low-voltage wiring and basic soldering. Responsibilities include building and reworking assemblies, performing functional tests, documenting results, and identifying and correcting simple failures. The position requires close collaboration with production, engineering, and materials staff to meet production goals and maintain a safe and organized workspace. The role may involve operating handling equipment and assisting with the movement of heavy or sensitive assemblies.

Requirements

  • 1–3+ years of experience in mechanical or electrical assembly, maintenance, wiring, or related technician work
  • Hands-on fiber optic splicing experience (fusion and/or mechanical splicing), including cable prep, termination, and testing
  • Ability to read and understand basic engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Hands-on experience using basic test equipment (multimeter, continuity tester, gauges, optical test equipment, etc.)
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, soldering tools, and basic mechanical assembly
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized processes
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with appropriate guidance
  • Willingness to learn new skills and assist across different areas of production

Nice To Haves

  • Formal fiber optic certification (e.g., CFOT or equivalent)
  • Experience with harness building, panel wiring, or low-voltage electrical work
  • Previous testing experience in manufacturing or engineering environments
  • ERP system exposure (Epicor Kinetic, SAP, Odoo, etc.)
  • Forklift or overhead crane certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Basic troubleshooting experience (electrical or mechanical)
  • Tube bending and swaging experience

Responsibilities

  • Assemble electro-mechanical products, subassemblies, wiring harnesses, and components following drawings, schematics, and work instructions
  • Perform fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing (fusion and/or mechanical splicing) to build and repair fiber optic assemblies and cable runs
  • Perform low-voltage wiring, basic soldering, connector installation, and cable routing
  • Build or rework assemblies using hand tools, power tools, and precision tools
  • Identify discrepancies in drawings or instructions and communicate them to the supervisor or engineering
  • Perform basic functional tests on completed assemblies using standard test equipment (multimeters, pressure/vacuum tools, continuity testers, optical power meters, OTDR, etc.)
  • Run scripted test procedures and document results accurately, including fiber optic loss/continuity testing
  • Identify simple electrical, mechanical, or fiber optic failures and perform basic corrective actions
  • Support engineering or senior technicians in setting up and operating test fixtures
  • Record work performed, test results, and inventory usage accurately
  • Follow established procedures for assembly, testing, and defect reporting
  • Assist with staging materials and organizing workspace as needed
  • Work closely with production, engineering, and materials staff to meet daily production goals
  • Shift between tasks based on production needs, including assembly, testing, and rework
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in clean and safe condition following 5S and safety guidelines
  • Safely operate handling equipment such as pallet jacks, hoists, or forklifts (training provided if needed)
  • Assist in movement of heavy or sensitive assemblies
  • Perform other duties as assigned
