About The Position

This position requires previous experience as an Asphalt Paving Machine Operator. The operator must be able to utilize pedals, levers, and the steering wheel to control the direction and speed of the machine and maneuver into the operating position. Responsibilities include communicating with Dump Truck Drivers for proper operation, controlling the pushing of preceding Dump Trucks to maintain the flow of asphalt into the hopper and the thickness of asphalt installation. The operator will use levers and switches to control burners, screed width, etc., and must understand, meet, and plan grade cross-slope requirements. The ability to set flow, adjust screed crown and strike off, and operate equipment while holding a straight line is essential. Pre-starting checks of fluids (oil, coolant, etc.) and inspection for damage are also required. The role may involve performing other labor/operator-related tasks as necessary to assist the crew with job completion, based on experience, abilities, and direction from the Foreman.

Requirements

  • Possess 3-5 years of asphalt experience.
  • Possess 3-5 years of experience operating asphalt equipment.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Walk, climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Ability to work 40+ hours outdoors, frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Strong work ethic with attention to detail.
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with insurable driving record.
  • Possess reliable transportation to work.
  • High School/GED.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous asphalt, line striping, grading, or seal coat experience.
  • Have a Class-A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Previous experience doing outdoor labor work in extreme heat.
  • Performs a wide variety of manual tasks including shoveling and raking material to grade, handwork, etc.
