About The Position

WE SERVE ALL. WE HIRE ALL. WE ACCEPT ALL. Now interviewing for a part-time (20 hours/week) American Sign Language (ASL) Staff Interpreter to join our Deaf Services Team. Aspire Indiana Health is a nonprofit provider of comprehensive “whole health” services including primary medical care, behavioral health, recovery services and programs addressing the social determinants of health such as housing and employment. Aspire has health centers in five Central Indiana counties serving Hoosiers of all ages and walks of life.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Must be fluent in ASL in order to be able to effectively communicate with hearing individuals and in American Sign Language (ASL), with deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing individuals.
  • Strong understanding of deaf culture and resources related to deafness and interpreter standards.
  • Strong ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle highly confidential information with professionalism.
  • Must be able to use appropriate industry terminology, and have excellent listening, retention and presentation skills.
  • Must have the ability to work and effectively deal with multiple types of personalities in a variety of situations.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between Aspire locations.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, current automobile insurance and a driving record that meets the guidelines and requirements of the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, human services, or related field highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in mental health, substance use treatment center and/or medical office setting highly preferred.
  • RID or any state certification in ASL interpreting.
  • Interpreter Training Program highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret for deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing clients, families and staff in clinical or administrative settings, and to hearing individuals when they are communicating with deaf or hard of hearing clients.
  • Coordinate schedules of interpreting staff.
  • Schedule with agencies for freelance interpreters, if needed.
  • Provide instruction in the use of adaptive equipment.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.
