O26/27 Temp/Hrly - Asl Interpreter

Arlington Public Schools•Arlington, VA

About The Position

Arlington Public Schools is seeking a qualified candidate to provide American Sign Language (ASL) and English interpreting services on an hourly, on-call basis in educational settings. Assignments depend on district needs and interpreter availability and qualifications. The position offers an entry pathway for interpreters who meet the minimum qualification threshold and are working toward the qualifications required for continued employment. Interpreters provide communication access in classrooms, IEP meetings, staff and department meetings, training sessions, and other assigned school activities. They prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials and educational terminology, and maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and impartiality under the applicable RID Code of Professional Conduct and APS procedures. The role also involves collaborating with teachers and staff while maintaining the interpreter role, and participating in training and professional development. This is an hourly, as-needed position paying $30.84 per hour, with flexible hours coordinated with administration. The position is temporary in nature, has no guaranteed duration, and may end at any time based on operational and staffing needs. It is not eligible for employee benefits. Applicants must meet one of the listed education and experience pathways and document at least one provisional interpreting qualification at hire. Interpreters hired below the qualification level required for continued employment must obtain and document an accepted higher-level credential within two years of their official hire date. Failure to meet that deadline results in removal from the on-call interpreter pool and termination of employment under applicable APS procedures. Interpreters who meet the required qualification at hire must maintain their credential’s validity throughout employment.

Requirements

  • Meet one of the following education and experience pathways: an associate’s degree including completion of an ASL Interpreter Training Program (ITP), or an equivalent combination of at least two years of postsecondary education, training, and experience including completion of an ASL ITP or higher-level interpreter education program.
  • Alternatively, have three years of progressively responsible ASL interpreting experience, including at least two years providing educational interpreting services for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Alternatively, have an equivalent combination of post-high-school education, interpreting experience, and training totaling at least five years; this must include graduation from an ASL ITP or higher-level interpreter education program, or an accepted credential specified for continued employment.
  • Provide documentation of at least one provisional interpreting qualification at hire: valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level II/II; a passing EIPA Written Test score and at least 3.0 on the EIPA Performance Test; or an equivalent qualification from another state accepted under applicable Virginia requirements and recognized by VDDHH as meeting or exceeding VQAS Level II.
  • An ASL ITP diploma or interpreting experience alone does not replace the minimum interpreting qualification threshold.
  • If hired provisionally, achieve the required VQAS Level III/III or EIPA 3.5 credential within exactly two years of the official hire date.
  • For continued employment, submit documentation within two years of hire of valid VQAS Level III or higher; an EIPA Performance Test score of at least 3.5 and a passing EIPA Written Test score; or current RID certification recognized by VDDHH as equivalent to or exceeding VQAS Level III.
