O26/27 TEMP/HRLY - ASL INTERPRETER

Arlington Public Schools•Arlington, VA

About The Position

Arlington Public Schools is seeking an ASL Interpreter to provide American Sign Language and English interpreting services in educational settings on an hourly, on-call basis. Assignments depend on district needs and interpreter availability and qualifications. This position provides an entry pathway for interpreters who meet the minimum qualification threshold and are working toward the qualifications required for continued employment. The role is temporary in nature, as-needed, and offers no guaranteed duration. Employment may end at any time based on operational and staffing needs. The position is not eligible for employee benefits. Compensation is $30.84 per hour, and work hours are flexible and coordinated with administration. Applicants must meet one of the specified education, training, or experience pathways and provide documentation of at least one provisional interpreting qualification at hire: VQAS Level II/II; a passing EIPA Written Test score and an EIPA Performance Test score of at least 3.0; or an equivalent qualification from another state accepted under applicable Virginia requirements and recognized by VDDHH as meeting or exceeding VQAS Level II. Interpreters hired below the required qualification level must obtain an accepted VQAS Level III-or-higher credential, an EIPA Performance Test score of at least 3.5 with a passing EIPA Written Test score, or current RID certification recognized by VDDHH as equivalent to or exceeding VQAS Level III within two years of the hire date. Failure to meet this condition will result in removal from the on-call pool and termination of employment under applicable APS procedures. Interpreters who meet the required qualification level at hire must maintain the validity of their applicable credential throughout employment.

Requirements

  • Meet one of the following education, training, and experience pathways: an associate’s degree including completion of an ASL Interpreter Training Program (ITP), or an equivalent combination of at least two years of postsecondary education, training, and experience including completion of an ASL ITP or higher-level interpreter education program; three years of progressively responsible ASL interpreting experience, including at least two years of educational interpreting for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing; or an equivalent combination of post-high-school education, interpreting experience, and training totaling at least five years, including graduation from an ASL ITP or higher-level interpreter education program, or an accepted credential specified for continued employment.
  • Provide documentation of at least one provisional interpreting qualification at hire: valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level II/II; a passing EIPA Written Test score and a minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.0; or an equivalent qualification from another state accepted under applicable Virginia requirements and recognized by VDDHH as meeting or exceeding VQAS Level II.

  • If hired below the required qualification level, obtain and submit an accepted VQAS Level III-or-higher credential, an EIPA Performance Test score of at least 3.5 plus a passing EIPA Written Test score, or current RID certification recognized by VDDHH as equivalent to or exceeding VQAS Level III within two years of hire.
  • Maintain the validity of the applicable credential throughout employment if hired at the required qualification level.
