About The Position

Toolworks is seeking an ASL-fluent Community Integration Instructor / Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide individualized and small-group instruction throughout San Francisco. Since 1975, Toolworks has partnered with people with disabilities to promote independence, equality, inclusion, and personal satisfaction. In this role, you will support participants as they explore community resources, recreation, volunteer opportunities, employment, transportation, and other activities based on their individual interests and goals.

Requirements

  • Fluency in American Sign Language is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and independently in ASL at a level appropriate for providing direct instruction and support.
  • At least two years of experience working with adults with disabilities, preferably in a community-based setting.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (may be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Regular travel throughout the community.
  • Flexibility based on participant and program schedules.
  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and automobile insurance (for assignments requiring driving).
  • Ability to pass program-required background clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Use American Sign Language throughout the workday to communicate directly with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing participants.
  • Provide person-centered instruction.
  • Support choice, self-advocacy, safety, and independence.
  • Help participants navigate public transportation, access community resources, participate in recreational or volunteer activities, build employment-related skills, strengthen community-safety awareness, and develop natural supports.
  • Document participant progress through clear and timely case notes.
  • Complete required service and incident reports.
  • Communicate regularly with supervisor and other members of the participant's support team.
