About The Position

Old Dominion ASAP Instructors provide classroom instruction to individuals referred to the program through the Circuit, District, Federal, and Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts; the Virginia DMV; out-of-state programs; or on a voluntary basis. Participants are typically required to complete the program due to alcohol- and/or drug-related offenses and must meet the program’s educational requirements. The Instructor will create a professional, supportive classroom environment while helping participants complete the required educational coursework.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college with emphasis in Education, Criminal Justice, or a related field; or any combination of experience equal to education requirements.
  • Two years of experience preferred in education, law enforcement, or counseling services in Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Driver Safety functions.
  • Must be able to travel between locations as needed.
  • Must be able to manage time and priorities effectively, handle stressful situations, and de-escalate emotionally charged individuals.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Required to pass the VASAP certification test within 90 days of hire.
  • NRADC Automatic Disqualifiers (Criminal History, Traffic Violations, Drugs, Others as detailed in the job description).
  • Must have held a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • Driver’s license must not have been suspended or revoked within three years of application.
  • No convictions within the past five years of Operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Fleeing or eluding a police officer, Failure to stop after an accident (hit and run), Operating a vehicle with a suspended license, Participating in a speed contest or drag race, Reckless driving or driving to endanger, Violation of state regulations on implied consent.
  • No convictions within the past ten years of Homicide or manslaughter with a motor vehicle, Theft or use of a motor vehicle in the commission of felony, Assault with a motor vehicle.
  • No more than two convictions for motor vehicle moving violations (other than those listed above) during the past three years.
  • No involvement in two or more avoidable (at fault) accidents during the previous three years.
  • No illegal sale or distribution of any illegal drugs in the past 7 years.
  • No illegal use of a controlled substance listed in Schedule I of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia in the past five years from the date of application submission (unless drug rehabilitation program completed). This does not include marijuana.
  • No illegal use of a controlled substance listed in Schedule II of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia in the past two years from the date of application submission (unless drug rehabilitation program completed).
  • No illegal use, possession of marijuana or a derivative thereof within the previous twelve months.
  • No past or current gang affiliation.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any military service.
  • Must not be untruthful and/or intentionally withhold information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position.
  • Must not intentionally fail to follow the directions outlined in the testing process or rely on others to complete any portion of the testing process.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in education, law enforcement, or counseling services in Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Driver Safety functions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person classroom education, facilitating sessions from approved VASAP materials.
  • Use ASAP-approved software to electronically update participant attendance and communicate with ASAP staff as needed.
  • Manage a class size of 15-30 participants; class size is based on location.
  • Willing to work weekends and evening hours.
  • Willingness to travel to Winchester, Warren, Page, and Shenandoah counties; instructors are assigned based on locality of choice and client-base needs.
  • Provides above-average customer service to internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating an attitude of teamwork and collaboration in service to others.
