About The Position

FortisOntario is seeking a motivated and self-directed Articling Student for a 10-month term from July 2027 to May 2028. This is a net new role within a dynamic business and legal environment. FortisOntario is an electricity utility that owns several power companies and manages the Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Project. The Articling Student will gain exposure to all practice areas, work with internal and external counsel, and contribute to legal issue assessment and business strategy development. The role offers the opportunity to take on significant responsibility, including leading some matters.

Requirements

  • Must have a Canadian common law degree or equivalent and be eligible for membership with the Law Society of Ontario as a student-at-law at the time articles are to commence.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and initiative, as well as the ability to work effectively with others.
  • A results-oriented focus and the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Superior writing and research skills.
  • Proficient with the use of information technology tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Westlaw.
  • Proven experience with keeping confidentiality and being resourceful.
  • Candidate must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.

Responsibilities

  • Corporate and commercial matters and assisting with due diligence.
  • Procurement and contract negotiations and drafting.
  • Research and preparation of legal memoranda in connection with various legislation, regulations, licenses, permits, and approvals governing our operations.
  • Assist in resolving disputes, including preparing materials, supporting negotiations, and coordinating next steps across internal and external stakeholders.
  • Corporate secretariat work including preparing board meeting materials and reports.
