About The Position

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is pleased to offer an articling opportunity to a motivated 2027 law graduate. The successful candidate will participate in the AESO’s 12-month Student-at-Law Program, which supports the development of a law graduate into a practicing lawyer in accordance with the Legal Profession Act, the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta, and the Law Society of Alberta Code of Conduct. You will be part of the Law department. Working collaboratively with internal colleagues, our team provides strategic legal and business advice in relation to a range of regulatory and commercial matters and ensures compliance with the AESO’s public interest mandate in accordance with our legislative and regulatory obligations.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor Degree from a faculty of common law at a Canadian university or an equivalent qualification
  • Eligibility to article as a Student-at-Law in the Province of Alberta as of May 2027
  • Strong legal research skills and computer literacy

Responsibilities

  • Support legal counsel in providing verbal and written legal advice on issues relevant to the AESO, including commercial and regulatory matters
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda to communicate findings
  • Assist in the drafting and development of AESO authoritative documents
  • Assist in responding to requests for information and in preparing guidance documents and training materials
  • Provide support in preparing for and executing stakeholder consultation sessions
  • Assist with the AESO’s participation in regulatory proceedings before the Alberta Utilities Commission and with litigation files, if and as they arise
  • Contribute to the development of a knowledge management database of legal and regulatory opinions and materials
  • Develop an understanding of the AESO’s mandate, relevant legislation, government policies, and industry issues.
