About The Position

St. Luke's is seeking a part-time Art Therapist for an Adolescent Inpatient BHU position. The preferred schedule is two full days per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), with flexibility available. Additional hours may be available through coverage opportunities at other sites during staff absences. The Art Therapist is responsible for assisting in the emotional and mental rehabilitation or adaptation of an individual with a disability using art therapy skills and other creative modalities. As a member of the treatment team, under the direction of the physician and/or Clinical Supervisor, the Art Therapist aids in the assessment, treatment, and discharge planning of individuals with disabilities. This position requires creativity, adaptability, and the ability to make independent judgments. The art therapist serves as a case manager and coordinates the treatment for an assigned number of patients under the supervision of the physician and/or Clinical Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited art therapy program.
  • Certification through the Board of Art Therapists.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training required within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year previous experience in mental health setting preferred.
  • CPR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competency in assessment, treatment modalities, growth and development, and communication appropriate to the age of patient population.
  • Provides structured art therapy/psychoeducational groups, individualized treatment programs and develops new programs.
  • Provides psychoeducational information to patients and their families as needed.
  • Participates in and presents in-services to behavioral medicine staff.
  • Co-supervises students to assure compliance with hospital and departmental policies.
  • Represents allied therapy in various multidisciplinary meetings.
  • May be required to provide back-up for other department therapists during vacation periods or extended absences.
  • May be asked to participate in individual patient care meetings with multidisciplinary team members/patient and/or family to evaluate progress and to identify and resolve problems that may interfere with a positive patient outcome.
  • Provides patient/family/staff education and advocacy as appropriate or requested.
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of mental health laws regarding patient's rights and voluntary/involuntary commitment proceedings, coordinating such proceedings with the necessary personnel.
  • Maintains appropriate, timely, and effective communication with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, department managers, ancillary departments, and the Network Coordinator regarding variances, aspects of patient care management, and interpersonal issues with staff members of departments in order to facilitate a positive outcome for patients.
  • Attends department staff meetings a minimum of 50% of the time and trainings relevant to position. Participates in activities which promote personal/professional development. Serves on assigned hospital and/or unit based councils.
  • Complies with established chain of command. Demonstrates the ability to appropriately balance the need for supervision with the level of autonomous functioning expected as observed by the manager.
  • Maintains clinical records of all patient contact and clinical reviews, according to hospital policy and other regulatory guidelines (i.e., State, JCAHO).
  • Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient, and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers.
  • Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
  • Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes, and practices.
  • Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
