About The Position

Common Ground High School is seeking an experienced, data-driven, and compassionate educator to join their team as an Art Teacher. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position. The ideal candidate will hold a CT certification in Art (042) or have an Art endorsement. The role involves teaching 10th-grade integrated Art classes and an Art elective, collaborating with the 10th-grade Core Curriculum team on culturally relevant, social justice-focused curriculum, and acting as a supportive member of the creative faculty. Responsibilities include developing lesson plans for diverse learners, working with special education teams, analyzing student performance data, maintaining records, and promoting family engagement.

Requirements

  • CT certification: Art (042), or certification with an Art endorsement.
  • Background in the themes at the center of the 10th grade core: New Haven Stories, Justice, Power, Public Health.
  • Experience with and passion for the arts and arts education (including videography, visual fine arts, theater, photography, spoken word).
  • Experience developing and sustaining relationships with community partners.
  • Understanding of the history and present-day dynamics of the city of New Haven, as well as connections/social networks within our city.
  • Experience in trauma-informed work, restorative justice, social emotional learning/literacy.
  • Background in experiential, place-based, and/or project-based learning.
  • Experience working with Google applications, online course management platforms, and other online learning tools.
  • Prior experience working with ELL students.
  • Ability to analyze student data to make informed recommendations for literacy instruction.
  • Demonstrated success of managing student behavior and classroom routines to maximize learning time and create a positive classroom environment.
  • Prior experience and positive record of collaborating with school staff.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed instruction and possess a belief that all students can learn and be successful.
  • A passion for our social justice mission and commitment to equitable and sustainable change.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Common Ground’s Integrated 10th grade Art classes and one Art elective class.
  • Work with the 10th grade Core Curriculum team to support 10th grade students through an culturally relevant integrated curriculum with a focus on social justice.
  • Act as a strong team member for Common Ground’s small, dedicated, creative faculty; teaching an elective or supporting instruction in another Common Ground course for one period a day.
  • Develop materials and lesson plans to teach students with varied instructional needs.
  • Work collaboratively with department colleagues and members of the special education team.
  • Actively review student performance data.
  • Prepare and maintain all records and reports.
  • Promote the engagement of families in their student’s educational progress.
