About The Position

The Art Teacher/MSS Elementary is responsible for teaching basic art classes and fundamentals, with an emphasis on drawing, painting techniques, and color mixing. The role involves exploring various art mediums, including pens, markers, watercolor, acrylics, tempera, and clay. The teacher will also incorporate design concepts, mixed media, collage, and 3D constructions. Responsibilities include setting up project schedules, working with gifted and talented students, reporting student progress to parents, administering discipline according to school policy, attending staff meetings, and carrying out supervisory duties assigned by the Principal. The teacher will also create and assist with extra-curricular activities, Meskwaki Language activities, and decorations for school events. Additionally, the role involves coordinating guest artists, managing clay techniques and glazes, and showcasing student art in school display cases and community events, including entering student work in the State Fair and art competitions.

Requirements

  • Must possess a Bachelor's Degree and Certification required by the Bureau of Indian Education and the State of Iowa.
  • Must pass background check in accordance with Public Law 101-630, Public Law 101-647 and the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Teach basic art classes and fundamentals, including cross-curriculum studies with classroom teachers.
  • Emphasize drawing and painting techniques and review of basic color mixing.
  • Explore various art mediums, drawing, watercolor basics, use of pen and marker, and varied drawing and painting surfaces.
  • Teach art fundamentals with design concepts, drawing and painting techniques, and mixed media with collage or 3D constructions.
  • Teach drawing techniques with varied art media to include pens, pencils & colored pencil, markers and mixed media techniques.
  • Teach basic painting techniques with color mixing and color theory with the color wheel, learning differences between different types of paints (acrylics, watercolor, & tempera).
  • Teach about different painting applications and assorted painting surfaces.
  • Discuss areas of art study, set up schedule for projects and materials that will be needed at the beginning of the year.
  • Work with GT students on special assignments based on their creativity evaluations with GT teacher.
  • Report regularly to the parent/guardian in regard to their child's progress.
  • Administer discipline in accordance to the Board Policy of the Meskwaki Settlement School.
  • Attend regularly all meetings of the staff convened by the Principal.
  • Carry out supervising responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
  • Create and assist with extra-curricular and Meskwaki Language activities.
  • Teach types of clay, glazes and explore limitations of clay and uses of varied techniques, the firing process, Wheel throwing, storage of clay and in-process clay pieces, slab techniques, and use of slab roller, construction techniques with clay, and application of glazes.
  • Coordinate guest artists to demonstrate and show throwing techniques, applied designs, and trimming, and glazing review and storage of wet pots.
  • Help with prom, graduation, choir and band concert decorations for the stage.
  • Knowledge of Calligraphy.
  • Set up display cases showcasing student in various areas of the school.
  • Show case student art in public in the community.
  • Enter student work at the State Fair in Des Moines in order to publicize the Meskwaki Settlement School and Art Department.
  • Helped students enter several art competitions sponsored by various Meskwaki Tribal Departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
