About The Position

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth. We are seeking an Area Supervisor to lead frontline staff and uphold best practices in the supervision and safety of juveniles in a secure residential environment. This dynamic leadership role is essential to the effective daily operation of the BAJCC. The Area Supervisor ensures the safety, security, and well‑being of both staff and residents while maintaining the integrity of facility operations. This position is public‑facing and requires consistent in‑person interaction with staff, residents, and other members of the community. Selected applicants for this position are subject to a background investigation and pre-employment drug screen. Must complete the Department of Juvenile Justice’s mandated training and certifications.

Requirements

  • Considerable supervisory experience in a secure residential setting.
  • Knowledge of safety, security, and crisis intervention practices.
  • Ability to use appropriate restraint methods, operate security tools and equipment and administer first aid.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain records and documentation prepare reports, quickly assess situations, and take appropriate action.
  • A valid driver’s license is required of DJJ employees to operate a state-owned or leased vehicle.

  • Progressively responsible corrections or law enforcement experience, part of which must have been at a supervisory level.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting inspections and searches of common physical areas and perimeters of assigned areas following procedures to ensure safety, security, and a healthy environment are maintained.
  • Providing direct supervision to the JCS staff within their assigned area of supervision on campus.
  • Completing all administrative and program documentation (such as timesheets, leave forms, incident reports, logbook entries, various forms, etc.) legibly, completely, timely, and accurately, and assisting in on-the-job training of new JCS staff and the continual coaching of all JCS staff.
  • Monitor and Respond to Trends: Analyze access patterns, behavioral trends, and the needs of staff and residents to ensure a secure and productive facility environment. Utilize data and observations to implement proactive strategies that enhance safety and efficiency.
  • Crisis Intervention: Serve as the first level of crisis intervention, providing real-time support to staff during high-pressure situations. This includes de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Facility Oversight: Manage and oversee designated areas of the facility to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Conduct regular inspections, monitor compliance with policies and procedures, and address any facility-related issues promptly.
  • Staff Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and support facility staff, fostering professional growth and team cohesion. Provide guidance on best practices and maintain a positive work culture.
  • Resident Engagement: Maintain visibility and approachability among residents, building rapport and supporting their rehabilitative journey. Ensure residents adhere to facility rules and participate in structured activities that promote development.
  • Safety and Security Compliance: Enforce safety and security protocols, including monitoring movement within the facility, conducting safety drills, and ensuring all equipment and resources are accounted for.
  • Training and Development: Support ongoing staff training initiatives, emphasizing crisis management, behavioral interventions, and security protocols.
  • Documentation: Ensure the ability to provide detailed reports and review reports from subordinate staff to ensure accuracy and proper punctuation.
