About The Position

As an Area Manager at Stumptown, you’ll provide visionary leadership across 3–7 cafes within your assigned geography. You’ll guide and grow a team of passionate leaders and baristas, championing hospitality, operational excellence, and people development every step of the way. Reporting directly to the VP of cafes, you’ll be the go-to leader for your market—bringing strategy to life, contributing to programmatic concepting and curation, leading key projects, maintaining employee and guest facing POS systems, and managing local vendor relationships. This is a dynamic role that blends day-to-day operational excellence with high-level collaboration, ensuring every café reflects our mission, values, and commitment to craft.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of café, restaurant, or retail management experience (multi-unit leadership preferred).
  • A genuine love for coffee, people, and building great teams.
  • A strong grasp of café or food service financials, P&L, and operations.
  • Comfort with tools like NetSuite, Microsoft D365, Square, or similar POS/enterprise systems.
  • A proactive leadership style with the ability to coach, mentor, and provide clear, productive feedback.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Flexibility to travel locally and nationally (10–20%).

Responsibilities

  • Inspire, coach, and empower Café Managers to cultivate high-performing, inclusive teams.
  • Set clear expectations and support continuous growth through regular feedback and mentorship.
  • Foster a values-driven, supportive, and fun environment for both staff and customers.
  • Champion Stumptown’s culture and lead by example in every interaction.
  • Develop tailored career paths for leaders and emerging talent.
  • Stay connected to trends in coffee, retail, and hospitality to ensure innovation and relevance.
  • Ensure strong execution of daily operations across all cafés.
  • Recruit and place the right people in the right roles, supporting consistent onboarding and training.
  • Uphold standards related to food safety, cash handling, inventory, and risk/loss prevention.
  • Partner with HQ teams and cross-functional leaders to roll out brand and product initiatives.
  • Support ongoing systems use including Square, D365, online ordering platforms, and vendor tools.
  • Drive performance in line with revenue, traffic, and profitability goals.
  • Translate data into insights to improve guest experience and team performance.
  • Track and improve key success metrics (sales, turnover, training completion, customer feedback).
  • Manage local vendor relationships and community presence.
  • Perform all duties and tasks as assigned.
