About The Position

The Area Director is responsible for the overall management, oversight, and operation of 5–7 specialized residential homes serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health needs, and/or other specialized care requirements. This position ensures the delivery of high-quality, person-centered services while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory, licensing, accreditation, and funding requirements. The Area Director provides leadership and support to home managers and direct care staff, oversees resident care and safety, manages staffing and operational concerns, and serves as a liaison between the organization, residents, guardians, Community Mental Health (CMH), licensing representatives, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Overall management, oversight, and operation of 5–7 specialized residential homes.

  • Maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory, licensing, accreditation, and funding requirements.
  • Providing leadership and support to home managers and direct care staff.
  • Overseeing resident care and safety.
  • Managing staffing and operational concerns.
  • Serving as a liaison between the organization, residents, guardians, Community Mental Health (CMH), licensing representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Completing required monthly face-to-face contacts with residents.
  • Reviewing incidents, accidents, and medication errors and ensuring appropriate follow-up.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to support resident outcomes.
  • Assisting with admissions, discharges, and transitions of care.
  • Ensuring implementation of individual plans of service and behavioral support plans.
  • Overseeing medication administration practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitoring medication documentation, storage, ordering, and administration procedures.
  • Investigating medication-related concerns and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Providing guidance and support to managers and direct care staff regarding medication protocols.
  • Supervising and supporting home managers and direct care staff.
  • Conducting regular site visits and staff meetings.
  • Completing monthly contacts with staff members within assigned homes.
  • Assisting with recruitment, interviewing, onboarding, training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Addressing staffing concerns, employee relations issues, and disciplinary matters.
  • Ensuring adequate staffing coverage and participating in on-call responsibilities.
  • Covering shifts as needed to ensure continuity of care and operational stability.
  • Maintaining safe, clean, and compliant residential environments.
  • Ensuring completion of required safety drills, inspections, and environmental reviews.
  • Monitoring infection control practices and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Investigating and responding to health and safety concerns.
  • Overseeing daily operations of assigned residential homes.
  • Monitoring budgets, purchasing, and resource utilization.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Collaborating with organizational leadership to achieve operational and strategic goals.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for guardians, case managers, licensing personnel, CMH representatives, and community partners.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable: CARF standards, State licensing regulations, HCBS (Home and Community-Based Services) requirements, Community Mental Health (CMH) requirements, Medicaid regulations, Organizational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, surveys, and inspections. Develop and implement corrective action plans when necessary. Maintain readiness for licensing, accreditation, and payer reviews.
  • Ensure the provision of quality, person-centered care and services. Monitor resident health, safety, rights, and overall well-being.
