About The Position

Responsible for the development and execution of all Safety strategic goals for the Area in accordance with WM Safety Services guidance. This role involves working closely with Corporate and Market Area Senior Leadership Teams to understand, support, and align safety strategy, goals, and objectives. The position oversees and manages the Drive Cam System, Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention Program, and ensures appropriate dissemination of EH&S policies and communications. The Area Director of Safety also manages incident investigations, ensures compliance with DOT and OSHA regulations, oversees safety management systems, and manages the Hazardous Energy Control Program. Additionally, this role is responsible for managing the Safety Recognition Program, ensuring adherence to Medical Monitoring and Industrial Hygiene Programs, and acting as the Subject Matter Expert for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policies and procurement. People development in safety is a key component, including coaching and training on risk management and safety topics, and guiding market area safety specialists and leaders on effective employee observations and coaching conversations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (accredited) or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED (accredited) and four years of relevant work experience.
  • 10+ years in Safety or Operations Management.
  • 3 years managing a team of two or more individuals.
  • Strong knowledge in Safety Rules & Regulations including DOT and OSHA.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Public speaking experience required.
  • Demonstrated Performance - Leadership potential including ability to influence up, down, and across the organization.
  • Proven track record of consistently delivering safety results.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive initiative to drive safety initiatives in the Area.
  • Demonstrated ability of hiring and developing talented individuals both within Safety and/or throughout the Area.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with Corporate and Market Area Senior Leadership Teams to understand, support, and align safety strategy, goals, and objectives.
  • Oversees, manages, and consults with Market Area and Site leaders on Drive Cam System Management, including analysis, reporting, coaching, interventions, and ride-alongs.
  • Identifies, reduces, and eliminates tasks that present a high risk for serious injury and/or fatality through the SIF Prevention Program.
  • Conducts Protection Validation Studies on each SIF situation to identify and close protection gaps.
  • Works closely with EH&S team to ensure appropriate dissemination and implementation of EH&S policies, corporate safety communications, and initiatives.
  • Assesses risks and monitors Market Area safety trends to create and deploy appropriate safety awareness messaging.
  • Determines severity of incidents and initiates formal investigations as necessary, ensuring all relevant incident data is captured in the WM EH&S portal.
  • Creates and disseminates qualitative and quantitative reports on Site and/or Market Area incidents analyses.
  • Works closely with Third Party Risk Administrator to ensure all required information is documented and transferred appropriately.
  • Determines the level of Root Cause Analysis to be performed and works with the People Team as required.
  • Analyzes incident trends and works closely with both Market Area and Site Leadership to ensure the District Specific Safety Plan (DSSP) is in place and operational.
  • Has oversight of the WM Hazardous Energy Control Program and is able to direct, train, and coach others on relevant topics.
  • Works closely with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to ensure WM is in adherence to all required DOT/OSHA standards and regulations.
  • Manages site/safety management systems, including fire protection/detection/alarms, and ensures inclement weather/natural disaster preparedness plans are in place.
  • Conducts Safety Audits/Inspections and assists with commercial insurance management issues.
  • Establishes performance criteria/thresholds and feedback mechanisms for the Safety Recognition Program.
  • Works closely with Corporate Subject Matter Experts to ensure all sites are following the Medical Monitoring Program and are in adherence to the WM Industrial Hygiene Program Management.
  • Acts as the SME on WM PPE policies and procurement for their Market Area.
  • Constructively develops and coaches others on overall risk management and safety topics, providing developmental opportunities based on various data points.
  • Coaches and trains market area safety specialists and leaders on safety trends to be used in conducting effective employee observations and coaching conversations.
