About The Position

The Director of Campus Safety is a strategic and operational leader responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive programs designed to protect the safety and well-being of students, staff, and district property. This role facilitates a secure learning environment through close collaboration with district and building administration. Key responsibilities include designing professional development for safety personnel, co-leading the District Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), and managing the lifecycle of security-related hardware in partnership with IT and Facilities. As the primary liaison to external public safety agencies, the Director ensures seamless coordination between the district and the community during both routine operations and emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field preferred
  • Emergency management experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a police officer, facility security officer, or in a comparable security role
  • Experience in school security and safety training preferred
  • Experience in crisis management; investigation of individuals and/or incidents; and facility, personnel protection, and training

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between the district and local, county, state, and federal police and fire officials.
  • Prepare agendas for and co-facilitate District Safety Committee meetings.
  • Facilitate the annual review of the District Emergency Operations Plan with the Safety Committee and local police and fire representatives to meet statutory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all mandatory School Safety Drills: Building Evacuation (Fire/Hazardous Materials/Bomb Threat), Bus Evacuation, Severe Weather/Shelter in Place (Tornado) and Lockdown Drill within the first 90 days of school.
  • Visit all campuses and off-site district athletic facilities frequently to assess implementation of safety measures and identify areas for improvement.
  • Conduct annual security audits of all district facilities and present findings to the Associate Superintendent.
  • Meet monthly, or as needed, with the Directors of Buildings and Grounds, the Athletic Directors, Student Activities Directors, Fine Arts Department Chairs, Principals, and other appropriate staff to review building schedules, usage, and security needs.
  • Provide professional development for school staff on safety and security topics (e.g., behavioral threat assessment, active shooter response, ICS training, evacuation drills, the Standard Response Protocol, and the Standard Reunification Method).
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to administration regarding school-day supervision and safety practices.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate all Campus Safety staff
  • Hold regular meetings with campus Safety Coordinators and the departments
  • Schedule and assign staff for daily operations, special events, and summer programs, including payroll approvals.
  • Develop and monitor the annual safety and security budget in collaboration with administration.
  • Ensure that all security-related equipment (e.g., radios, cameras, attendance and visitor management systems) are in proper working order.
