About The Position

The Department of State, Division of Library and Information Services, Bureau of Archives and Records Management is seeking an Archivist II. This is an Open Competitive position within the Career Service pay plan. The role involves providing assistance to researchers, performing historical and archival research, developing finding aids and policies, preparing statistics and reports, and providing group instruction on the State Archives' collections and services. The position also requires performing other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six years of direct professional experience.
  • At least one year of professional experience providing reference services in an archives or library setting.
  • At least one year of formal academic research experience from either work experience or in a higher education course of study.
  • Ability to communicate and convey ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates and superiors.
  • Ability to assimilate information quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in library science, archives, records management, history, public history, or one of the social sciences.
  • At least one year of professional experience in a formally established archives program (municipal, county, state, national, historical society or university).
  • Coursework or workshops in archives or records management outside of a completed degree or certification.
  • At least one year of professional experience working in one or more of the following: archival collections management, preservation/conservation, or public history programs.
  • At least one year of professional experience in providing technical assistance to municipal, county and state government agencies regarding archival issues or requests.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance to Archives researchers in accordance with professional archival reference and access standards and practices and with statutory and regulatory access requirements and restrictions, including identification and selection of desired archival records, use of indexes and other finding aids handling and use of archival collections, and use of online resources.
  • Performs historical and archival research necessary to respond to in person, mail, electronic and telephone requests for information from and about State Archives historical records collections and prepares replies for these requests.
  • Assists in the development of finding aids, written procedures and other archives policies as needed in accordance with professional archival descriptive standards and operating practices.
  • Assists in preparing weekly, monthly, and yearly statistics and reports such as register and catalog software data.
  • Provides group instruction to professional and history-allied organizations and the general public on the State Archives’ historical records collections, services and procedures to promote understanding, appreciation and use of the Archives.
  • Performs other work-related duties as required.
