About The Position

State Street Investment Management (“State Street IM”) is seeking an Architecture and Engineering Governance Lead to drive the execution and scaling of the firm’s architecture and engineering governance framework, with a focus on AI-driven and agentic software development lifecycle (SDLC). Operating within the Architecture & Engineering Governance function, this role is responsible for translating enterprise governance frameworks into actionable practices, ensuring that architecture standards, SDLC controls, and AI governance guardrails are consistently embedded into engineering delivery workflows. This role plays a key part in advancing a control-by-design operating model, aligning to three core pillars: AI-Driven SDLC (Build): Embedding governance controls across all SDLC phases; Agentic Governance (Automate): Managing risks and controls for autonomous and multi-agent systems; and Emerging technologies: Engaging other emerging technologies, examples include but not limited to digital/blockchain, quantum computing; developing frameworks for future use and controls for State Street Investment Management business. The role ensures that AI and agentic capabilities are delivered at scale with strong governance, transparency, and risk alignment, supporting both innovation and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • 10–12+ years of experience in enterprise architecture, software engineering, or technology governance.
  • Strong experience in architecture governance, SDLC controls, or design assurance practices.
  • Solid understanding of modern SDLC, DevSecOps, and cloud-based delivery models.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled development and associated governance considerations.
  • Experience working in regulated environments with risk and compliance oversight.
  • Strong collaboration and influence skills within matrixed organizations.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Exposure to AI/agentic systems, multi-agent workflows, or AI governance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD-based governance automation and developer tooling ecosystems.
  • Experience with platform-based architectures and distributed systems.
  • Understanding of risk frameworks such as NIST AI RMF or Financial Services AI risk practices.
  • Experience supporting large-scale technology or operating model transformations.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and operationalize the enterprise architecture and engineering governance framework across programs, products, and platforms.
  • Run architecture governance forums, design reviews, and lifecycle checkpoints, ensuring decisions are aligned to enterprise standards.
  • Drive consistent enforcement of architecture guardrails, SDLC controls, and engineering standards across delivery teams.
  • Support escalation and resolution of architecture deviations, design trade-offs, and compliance gaps.
  • Embed governance controls across the end-to-end AI-enabled SDLC, including requirements, design, development, testing, and deployment.
  • Drive adoption of continuous governance within CI/CD pipelines, ensuring controls are automated and embedded into delivery flows.
  • Support implementation of standardized control points, including AI-assisted development, testing validation, and release approvals.
  • Partner with engineering teams to ensure governance is applied at inception (“shift-left”) rather than post-delivery.
  • Support governance of agentic AI use cases, including autonomous workflows and multi-agent systems.
  • Help implement bounded autonomy and decision controls, ensuring agent actions operate within defined policies and access constraints.
  • Contribute to the implementation of an agent control plane, enabling centralized visibility of agents and use cases, policy enforcement at execution, and traceability of agent actions and outcomes.
  • Assist in governing multi-agent orchestration workflows, ensuring appropriate controls across action chains and system interactions.
  • Ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture principles, reference architectures, and platform strategies.
  • Promote use of standard platforms and reusable capabilities, reducing fragmentation and technical debt.
  • Validate that designs meet security, resilience, performance, and cost expectations.
  • Support implementation of governance telemetry and observability across AI and engineering systems, including execution traceability and audit logs, performance, risk, and drift indicators, and cost and usage monitoring.
  • Contribute to development of centralized governance dashboards / command center capabilities, improving transparency and oversight across AI and SDLC.
  • Support continuous testing, validation, and monitoring practices to ensure production readiness and resilience.
  • Ensure governance practices align with enterprise risk frameworks and regulatory expectations for AI and technology delivery.
  • Support exception management, audit readiness, and remediation tracking for governance-related issues.
  • Partner with Risk, Security, and Compliance teams to ensure AI and SDLC controls are consistently applied and evidenced.
  • Partner closely with Business Architecture, Solution Architecture, Engineering, QA, and Risk teams to embed governance into delivery.
  • Provide guidance and enablement to engineering teams on governance expectations, standards, and tools.
  • Help drive adoption of governance practices through training, tooling, and developer experience improvements.
  • Track and report on key governance metrics, including architecture compliance and deviations, SDLC control effectiveness, and AI/agentic adoption maturity.
  • Support continuous improvement of governance processes through automation, tooling, and feedback loops.
  • Provide inputs into senior-level reporting on governance effectiveness and delivery risk.
