About The Position

An outstanding opportunity exists for an accomplished architectural leader to direct a well-established Philadelphia studio within a nationally recognized multidisciplinary design organization. This role offers the authority to influence design quality, technical excellence, business growth, and studio culture while leading a talented team serving clients across civic, education, transportation, healthcare, aviation, science and technology, and other institutional markets. The Philadelphia practice has a strong foundation, an established client base, and an active project portfolio. The successful candidate will build upon that success while expanding market presence—particularly within the rapidly growing science and technology sector. Supporting this role is an experienced leadership team responsible for day-to-day staff management, allowing the Architectural Director to focus on practice leadership, client engagement, strategic growth, design excellence, and market positioning. This is more than a traditional office leadership position. It is an opportunity to shape the strategic direction of an architectural practice with meaningful autonomy and influence.

Requirements

  • Registered Architect (RA) license.
  • NCARB certification preferred.
  • Pennsylvania registration or eligibility through reciprocity.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive architectural experience.
  • At least five years leading teams, projects, or architectural practices.
  • Demonstrated success balancing design leadership, technical excellence, and business development.
  • Experience delivering complex institutional or commercial building projects.
  • Science and technology, laboratory, pharmaceutical, or research facility experience is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to build lasting client relationships and win new work.
  • Experience with Design-Build, P3, and other alternative delivery methods.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit/BIM and industry-standard design technologies.
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and leadership abilities.
  • Collaborative, strategic, and client-focused approach.
  • Active participation in professional architectural organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Philadelphia architectural practice.
  • Lead a team of studio leaders responsible for staff development, mentoring, and utilization.
  • Establish expectations for design excellence, technical quality, and project delivery.
  • Serve as Architect of Record and provide professional seal authority as required.
  • Collaborate with regional and national architectural leaders to share best practices and maintain consistency across offices.
  • Guide proposals, presentations, and project deliverables to ensure exceptional design and communication quality.
  • Drive business development across multiple building sectors including: Civic, Education, Transportation, Healthcare, Science & Technology.
  • Expand existing client relationships while identifying new market opportunities.
  • Represent the practice within industry organizations, conferences, and community events.
  • Lead pursuit strategy, interview preparation, and proposal development.
  • Serve as a visible industry leader through speaking engagements, publications, and thought leadership.
  • Help establish science and technology as a major area of future growth.
  • Provide executive oversight for project delivery from planning through construction.
  • Ensure projects consistently achieve design excellence, technical quality, and client satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with technical leadership to implement effective QA/QC processes.
  • Guide project teams through complex design challenges and alternative delivery methods.
  • Support effective staffing and resource planning across multiple offices.
  • Oversee project scope development, fee proposals, schedules, and work plans.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing studio culture.
  • Mentor architects at every stage of their careers.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop exceptional talent.
  • Support leadership development and succession planning.
  • Participate in hiring decisions, promotions, and compensation recommendations.
  • Champion a workplace culture centered on collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.
