About The Position

The Architect position is responsible for managing projects of various sizes and budgets through all phases of planning, design, procurement, and construction. This role involves designing small remediation projects in-house and coordinating with third-party consultants for larger projects. The Architect will review designs, drawings, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance with federal, state, and university standards, codes, and regulations. They will provide technical expertise, oversight, and cost estimates throughout the project lifecycle. Additionally, the Architect will work with in-house trades for smaller projects, provide technical assistance to campus planning and operations, troubleshoot maintenance issues, and coordinate with various departments and the Environmental Health and Safety Office to ensure a safe campus environment. This role also contributes to the development of the UH's Design Guide and involves performing on-site assessments in potentially demanding environments.

Requirements

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for professional architectural work involving the application of professional architectural principles and practices; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of architecture as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with architecture.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Considerable working knowledge of the principles and practices of the standard sources of architectural and engineering information, building construction and principles and practices and legal requirements of building, plumbing and electrical codes.
Considerable working knowledge of the principles of engineering mathematics sufficient to analyze stresses in structural members, prepare architectural and structural details and in relating field notes to prepare architectural plans.
Ability to design, detail and draw architectural and engineering features of various buildings, structures and installations which are pleasing and are adapted to the functions they must perform.
Knowledge of bid document production processes and activities, including production of plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
Ability to inspect and check the construction or alteration of buildings, structures and installations as to architectural requirements.
Ability to prepare building specifications, estimates and qualities of materials and prepare reports.
Ability to safely access elevated areas using ladders, stairs, platforms, or similar means.
Ability to bend, climb, kneel, crouch, and maneuver to enter, work within, and exit confined, restricted or tight spaces as required.
Ability to tolerate heat, humidity, limited airflow, dust, dirt, and similar environmental factors.
Ability to wear and work effectively while using required personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with all agency, site specific, and regulatory safety requirements.

Nice To Haves

Registration as a professional architect in the State of Hawaii.
Additional certifications in the field of energy conservation design, historic preservation, accessibility for the disabled and worker safety are encouraged. (i.e. LEED).
Familiarity with testing procedures of applicable building codes.
Hands-on forensic investigation experience of building enclosure failure in pursuit of remediation.
Experience with existing condition analysis for compliance with accessibility regulations.
Working knowledge of Hawaii regulations related to worker safety, including worker safety in high places.

Responsibilities

Manage projects of various sizes and budgets through planning, design, procurement and construction.
Design small remediation projects in-house, as well as manage and coordinate various third-party consultants to facilitate remediation projects of all sizes.
Review designs, drawings, plans, and specifications of complex projects prepared by professional licensed contract architects for compliance with federal, state, and university standards, codes, and regulations.
Provide technical expertise and oversight during all phases of Projects.
Prepare and/or review cost and quantity estimates for projects.
Ensure projects comply with UH’s Design Guide, identify value-engineering ideas, actively observe construction and commissioning activities, visit construction sites and write observation reports, and confirm delivery of turnover-to-operation deliverables.
Work with in-house trades to design and oversee the work for small remediation projects.
Provide technical assistance, recommendations, and architectural solutions to campus planning, operation, maintenance, and other department units.
Troubleshoot and recommend solutions to resolve major operational and maintenance problems.
Coordinate with shop personnel and other internal departments for building renewal projects and assessments, corrective engineering, preventative and deferred maintenance.
Work with Facilities in-house trade shops and UH’s Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) in efforts to make the Campus a safe work environment.
Work and communicate with various departments to identify building issues and its resolution/remediation.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
Participate in facilities operations planning and emergency response efforts.
Contribute to the development and update of UH’s Design Guide which provides guidance to project teams to implement design consistency, maintainability, future flexibility and lowest life cycle costs of new building construction and renovations.
Perform on site assessments in operational, construction, or field environments in locations that are elevated, confined, cramped, hot, dirty, or otherwise physically demanding, adhering to all applicable safety, health, and operational requirements.
