The Archaeologist will be stationed in Guam and provide on-site technical support to the Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Cultural Resources Manager for activities related to Programmatic Agreements between JRM and the Guam State Historic Preservation Officer. The work includes research and assessment of potential effects of military training and testing on cultural resources in the JRM Area of Responsibility, as well as participation in annual stakeholder meetings. The Archaeologist provides cultural-resource inventory and evaluation support, assesses effects on archaeological sites and historic properties, and coordinates with project proponents and managers, CEMML archaeologists, GIS specialists, technicians, and other project representatives. The role works in coordination with the JRM Cooperative Agreement Technical Representative, CEMML Cultural Resources Project Director, and CEMML Principal Investigator. The position conducts quarterly impact assessments and, when required, archaeological inventory and survey, testing, National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility evaluations, and data recovery ahead of military training, construction, and land-management activities. It involves research into local prehistory and history, developing and overseeing field investigations, and ensuring project records are properly documented and stored according to Department of Defense standards and protocols. The Archaeologist uses GPS and Survey123 to collect data and maintain site forms, and is responsible for field equipment and conservation supplies. The position follows the Project Director’s procedures, plans, schedules, and deadlines, and is accountable for completing assigned contract tasks. It requires professional, respectful interaction with Navy personnel and stakeholders, sound communication and conflict-resolution skills, and the ability to work independently in remote, rugged conditions. The employee must be able to deploy from Guam to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, sometimes on short notice, and may supervise temporary field or laboratory technicians. Relocation expenses may be available subject to conditions.
