We are seeking a motivated and technically strong Archaeologist to join our growing Environmental Team within the NY Planning & Environment Department. The ideal candidate brings a solid technical foundation in archaeology and cultural resources, along with a desire to support environmental planning, documentation, and permitting for major transportation clients. This role includes a blend of office-based analysis and documentation as well as fieldwork across New York and the surrounding region.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field and 2 years of relevant experience, or Master's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field and 1 year of relevant experience.
Experience preparing consultation packages including Phase 1A documentation for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 14.09 of the New York State Historic Preservation Act.
Excellent project organization skills and research skills.
Highly collaborative, positive and proactive communication skills.
Proficient with GIS and finished map production.
Experience with graphic programs such as Adobe for public presentations and report graphics.

Nice To Haves

5 years of professional experience working for a private cultural resource consulting firm, non-profit, or government agency.
Meets Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification for Archaeology.
Proficient in GIS mapping.
Familiarity with the native tribes of the New York and New England Regions.

Responsibilities

Works in both the field or laboratory/office settings depending on project needs.
May be referred to as a Sr Field Technician or Sr Lab Technician to comport with any client-specific labor classification system.
Performs assignments under the direction of high-level staff such as a Project Archaeologist, Field Director, Laboratory Director or Principal Investigator.
Coordinates with senior staff to ensure projects are completed within schedule and budget constraints.
Helps maintain archaeological collections and data files related to specific projects.
May assist senior staff with research and technical report preparation in accordance with established guidelines.
May lead the work of more junior staff either in a field or lab setting.
Conducts archaeological investigations in accordance with applicable state/federal guidelines.
Performs fieldwork in adverse environmental conditions (i.e., rugged terrain, inclement weather, remote locations).
Performs other duties as assigned.
