About The Position

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is seeking a highly motivated Cultural Resource Specialist with 2-7 years of experience in leading field teams and projects, and writing reports to join their Northwest Cultural Resource Team. The role involves archaeological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines. Candidates should be familiar with working on active construction sites, knowledgeable of regional archaeological materials, and possess experience in field recordation and mapping using app-based software. The position requires a Master's degree or higher in archaeology/anthropology or a related field, and must be a Secretary of Interior-Qualified Archaeologist and certified (or able to be certified) as an Oregon State-Qualified archaeologist. The role also requires a valid driver’s license and experience driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles off-road. Occasional travel for site visits, projects, field work, and in-person team collaboration may be required, with potential travel to Washington and Idaho.

Requirements

  • 2-7 years of experience in leading field teams & projects, & writing reports
  • Experienced in archaeological monitoring, surveys, and documentation of archaeological, and/or paleontological resources in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal guidelines and requirements
  • Previous professional experience with writing technical reports
  • Access to OARRA or qualified to obtain access to OARRA
  • Demonstrated ability to use app-based software for field recordation and mapping
  • Secretary of Interior-Qualified Archaeologist
  • Certified (or able to be certified) as an Oregon State-Qualified archaeologist
  • Familiar with working on active construction sites
  • Knowledgeable of archaeological materials common to the region
  • Minimum of 2-7 years of field experience in Oregon
  • Enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack
  • Able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments
  • Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in vegetated environments, agricultural fields, arid lands, and along stream banks
  • May be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions
  • Some early morning, late night and/or weekend work, as well as long hours may be required
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Experience driving 4 wheel-drive vehicles off-road
  • Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to perform survey and other work-related tasks

Responsibilities

  • Monitor construction activities and identify archaeological resources
  • Effectively communicate with construction crews and project personnel
  • Write and maintain written daily survey, monitoring, recordation, and cataloging logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools and GIS mapping applications
  • Lead field teams and projects
  • Perform all aspects of archaeological monitoring
  • Coordinate with construction personnel
  • Interact with Native American monitors
  • Write sections of reports
