About The Position

This position is responsible for reviewing tree preservation and plans for new projects, investigating proposed development sites for tree preservation, and attending pre-application and pre-construction meetings. The Arborist performs job site inspections for tree protection fencing, landscaping, and related concerns, and reviews residential permits for compliance with the County’s tree ordinance. They also inspect development sites for final approval of certificate of occupancy for compliance with the County’s tree ordinance, and review and approve permits for removal, replacement and/or on-site relocation of trees. This role involves answering questions from developers, engineers, and the general public on various aspects of the County’s tree ordinance, processing customer inquiries and complaints, and assisting with training and education of staff, developers, design professionals, and the public on the County’s Tree Protection Ordinance. The Arborist will represent the Department and testify in court cases, inspect and confirm certification on tree conditions conducted by private Arborists, and review and make recommendations on variance applications to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all applicable codes and ordinances is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Horticulture or related field
  • Two years of experience in forestry, horticulture, civil engineering, or a related field
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Must possess and maintain a valid International Society of Arboriculture Certification
