About The Position

SYSTRA Canada is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Arborist to join their team in support of a major linear infrastructure project in Ontario. The Arborist will lead and oversee all arboricultural components of the project, including large-scale tree inventories, Butternut Health Assessments, seed collection programs, and the establishment of replacement stock. This role will also involve regulatory approvals, technical reporting, and coordination with engineering and design teams. This is an opportunity to contribute to a prominent public transit initiative as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, with potential for full-time employment for a candidate who demonstrates technical expertise and cultural alignment.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a consulting arborist, ideally in Ontario
  • ISA Certified Arborist designation is required
  • Butternut Health Assessor certification is required
  • Proven success preparing and submitting tree removal plans for development or infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrated experience implementing the Butternut Health Assessment process in Southwestern Ontario
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, regulators, and the public
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes consulting environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on linear infrastructure projects (e.g., transit, transportation corridors, utilities)
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site in the Hamilton project office as required

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and lead tree inventory field studies across the full project corridor
  • Lead and implement Butternut Health Assessments in accordance with provincial guidelines
  • Develop and oversee seed collection programs and the establishment of replacement planting stock
  • Lead the preparation and review of arborist reports supporting tree removal applications and regulatory approvals
  • Ensure all deliverables meet applicable municipal and provincial requirements
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and landscape architects to develop tree removal plans, tree protection strategies and drawings, and restoration and compensatory planting plans
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior arborists and interdisciplinary team members
  • Support a collaborative, high-performing project environment
