About The Position

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a dynamic and experienced Aquatics Director to develop, organize, and implement high-quality YMCA aquatic programs. This role ensures a safe, fun, and enjoyable aquatics experience for members and program participants. The Aquatics Director will be responsible for maintaining a safe aquatic operation, growing aquatics programming, managing operations, and developing staff. Key priorities include supervision of aquatics safety, accountability for budget expectations, recruitment of new members through innovative programming, and ensuring complete aquatics maintenance and pool care. Collaboration with outside organizations and community partners is also essential.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications (instructor level preferred).
  • Must have YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Certification within 180 days of hire.
  • Current Swim Instructor Certification preferred, or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Current CPO or AFO certification preferred, or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Will be required to have trainer certifications in CPR, AED, O2, Swim Instructor and Lifeguarding within 1 year of employment.
  • Ability to maintain all required certifications and the necessary level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Requires a person of maturity and good judgment, who can operate with a minimum of guidance.
  • Requires ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment and make non-routine decisions.
  • Requires effective team-building and team-leadership skills.
  • Must maintain cooperative, functional relationships with leadership, peers, and subordinates.

  • Must have ability to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, and to travel as needed.

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Ability to pass a lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance.
  • Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
  • Must be able to lift and pull 75 pounds.
  • An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements of the position. They may include criminal background and reference checks, E-Verify, drug test, driver’s license record, and/or a Child Protective Services Check (CPS). Additional driver’s license check, CPS, criminal background check, alcohol, and/or drug testing may be required in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, organizes, and implements high-quality YMCA aquatic programs.
  • Ensures the aquatics experience is safe, fun, and enjoyable for members and program participants.
  • Maintains a safe aquatic operation, including physical facilities with trained and ready staff.
  • Drives the growth of aquatics programming, including Swim Lessons and Family Programs.
  • Manages operations such as certifications, audits, in-services, and chemical logs.
  • Focuses on staff development, including recruiting, hiring, and training.
  • Supervises all aspects of aquatics safety at the assigned center.
  • Manages the budget and financial performance of the aquatics department.
  • Recruits new members and participants through innovative aquatic programming.
  • Provides complete aquatics maintenance and pool care.
  • Collaborates with outside organizations and partners to ensure pool availability.
  • Develops and manages the aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Makes necessary purchases, inventories, and deliveries of program-related supplies.
  • Directs and supervises all aquatic program activities.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, rentals, water exercise, and family events.
  • Models relationship-building skills and responds to member inquiries and complaints.
  • Compiles program statistics and monitors program effectiveness.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises all aquatic personnel and volunteers.
  • Reviews and evaluates staff performance and develops strategies to motivate staff.
  • Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, oxygen administration, swim instructor First Aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training.
  • Assists with Program Committee and Cabinet meetings.
  • Ensures all aquatics staff are trained in emergency procedures and responds to emergencies.
  • Completes employee training as required.
  • Adheres to all YMCA policies, procedures, rules, safety precautions, regulations, and best practices.
  • Performs all functions as those they supervise and meets qualifications and certifications.
  • Assists in all areas as assigned.
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of outdoor and indoor pools.
  • Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
