About The Position

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking an Aquatics Director to develop, organize, and implement high-quality YMCA aquatic programs. This role ensures the aquatics experience is safe, fun, and enjoyable for members and program participants. Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications (instructor level preferred).
  • Must have YMCA Lifeguard Instructor Certification within 180 days of hire.
  • Current Swim Instructor Certification preferred, or obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Current CPO or AFO certification preferred, or obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Will be required to have trainer certifications in CPR, AED, O2, Swim Instructor and Lifeguarding within 1 year of employment.
  • Ability to maintain all required certifications and the necessary level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment.
  • Effective team-building and team-leadership skills.
  • Must maintain cooperative, functional relationships with the senior leadership team, peers, and subordinates.
  • Must maintain a positive, energetic attitude toward YMCA work, goals, and values.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day.

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Ability to pass a lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions).
  • Must be able to lift and pull 75 pounds.
  • Satisfactory results from background checks (criminal background, reference checks, E-Verify, drug test, driver’s license record, and/or Child Protective Services Check).

Nice To Haves

  • Instructor level preferred for YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certifications.
  • Current Swim Instructor Certification.
  • Current CPO or AFO certification.
  • Minimum experience of 3-5 years in the aquatics field.
  • College degree in a relevant field is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience in the aquatics field.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe aquatic operation, including physical facilities with trained and ready staff.
  • Grow aquatics programming, including Swim Lessons and Family Programs.
  • Manage operations such as certifications, audits, in-services, and chemical logs.
  • Develop staff through recruiting, hiring, and training.
  • Supervise all aspects of aquatics safety at the assigned center.
  • Manage the budget and achieve outcomes for the aquatics department.
  • Recruit new members and participants through innovative aquatic programming.
  • Provide complete aquatics maintenance and pool care.
  • Collaborate with outside organizations and partners to meet community needs.
  • Develop and manage the aquatics budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Make necessary purchases, inventories, and deliveries of program-related supplies.
  • Direct and supervise all aquatic program activities.
  • Establish new program activities and expand programs within the community.
  • Create and schedule swim classes, rentals, water exercise, and family events.
  • Model relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Respond to member and community inquiries and complaints.
  • Compile program statistics and monitor program effectiveness.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and supervise all aquatic personnel and volunteers.
  • Review and evaluate staff performance.
  • Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, oxygen administration, and First Aid/CPR training.
  • Ensure all aquatics staff are trained in emergency procedures and respond to emergencies.
  • Complete all related reports for record keeping.
  • Actively participate in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Complete employee training as required.
  • Adhere to all YMCA policies, procedures, rules, safety precautions, regulations, and best practices.
  • Perform all functions as those they supervise and meet qualifications and certifications of Lifeguard III and Swim Instructor.
  • Assist in all areas as assigned.
  • Conduct and ensure proper maintenance of outdoor and indoor pools.
  • Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
