About The Position

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is excited to add a Part Time Aquatic Specialist to the team! This position will be located at Marion Diehl Recreation Center and will be responsible for developing and facilitating recreation programs such as water aerobics, swim lessons and other aquatic programs. The incumbent may also participate in providing in-service trainings to Lifeguard staff and providing additional support on the pool deck. In addition, the selected candidate will be crucial in developing strong partnerships with our community. This position will work about 29 hours per week, which will primarily consist of evenings and weekends. Requirements

  • No experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Combination of relevant experience and relevant education accepted: Yes
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
  • Requires the ability to obtain (within six months of hire) and maintain CPR/AED, Lifeguard Certification, Starfish Instructor Certification
  • Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Instruction in area of specialist.
  • Recreational and/or aquatic programming and instruction.
  • Principles, practices and techniques of public recreation in an aquatic environment for all ages.
  • Applying aquatic and/or recreation knowledge through hands-on activities while meeting the needs of diverse populations.
  • Developing and enforcing general rules and safety procedure.
  • Managing multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Organizing and presenting demonstrations in an aquatic setting.

  • StarGuard/Starfish Instructor Certification and/or Water Safety Instructor.
  • Experience delivering water aerobics and/or swim lesson programs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and evaluate programs and activities in an aquatic environment and recreation center or park facility.
  • Provide weekly in-service trainings to lifeguards.
  • Provide customer service and handling of funds in a recreation center or park facility through telephone, emails, web site, social media and walk in patrons and customers for information, program registration, center daily use and rentals.
  • Ensure safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary.
  • Enforce rules and regulations.
  • Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
  • Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
  • Supervise children involved in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
  • Handle inquiries and complaints from public.
  • Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location.
  • Assist with department events and field trips.
  • Serve as the manager on duty on a regular rotation.
