About The Position

The Aquatic Program Coordinator is a key team member of the Aquatic department at the Kelowna Family Y. This role involves delivering swimming lessons, planning and adapting lesson plans for various participants, providing communication reports, supporting program coordination, creating alternative lesson plans, responding to emergencies, and communicating professionally with stakeholders. The coordinator also functions as a positive role model demonstrating YMCA core values.

Requirements

  • YMCA Canada Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor
  • National Lifeguard - Pool Option
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C
  • Class 5 driver's licence with a clear drivers abstract report.
  • Eligibility that meets the Canada Summer Job Program requirements
  • Provide 3 references of a professional nature (e.g. Employer, Supervisor or Colleague)
  • Provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) certification would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver swimming lessons at YMCA SIBC facilities and at an outdoor lake location.
  • Plan, prepare, and adapt lesson plans for participants of varying ages, abilities, and skill levels, including adaptive and inclusive programming.
  • Provide daily written communication reports to assist Aquatic Supervisor and Manager.
  • Support program coordination by assisting with scheduling, participant assessments, progress tracking, and completion of report cards using the YMCA’s SwimGen program.
  • Create alternative lesson plans in response to weather conditions, participant needs, or operational changes, ensuring program continuity and safety.
  • Respond appropriately to first aid incidents and emergency situations.
  • Communicate professionally with participants, parents/guardians, coworkers, and supervisors through verbal and written communication.
  • Participate in regular check-ins, supervision, and mentorship meetings with Aquatic Supervisor and Manager to receive feedback and support with skill development.
  • Function as a positive role model by demonstrating YMCA core values (honesty, caring, inclusiveness, responsibility, respect).
