About The Position

The Aquatic Fitness Instructor will conduct safe, fun, dynamic and effective water fitness classes based on YMCA Standards & Guidelines. This role requires providing a high degree of member service, ensuring participant safety, and planning/instructing inclusive aquatic fitness classes. The instructor will incorporate various equipment and current fitness techniques, staying updated on Health & Wellness and Aquatics trends. Maintaining professional class operations and supporting staff/member well-being are also key aspects of the position.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in related field.
  • Current CPR/AED and first aid certifications (American Red Cross).
  • Must have an AEA Certification.
  • Excellent customer service and communications skills.
  • Must be available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of YMCA Principles of Health & Fitness, Working with Older Adults, Older Adult Water Fitness Instructor, Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program Instructor certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a high degree of member service by maintaining professional relationships with members and addressing their needs, concerns, and questions regarding the YMCA, its programs, and mission.
  • Ensure participant safety and emergency preparedness by maintaining thorough knowledge of emergency procedures, taking appropriate action during Aquatics Department emergencies, and following sanitary practices in accordance with CDC guidelines.
  • Plan and instruct safe, effective, and inclusive aquatic fitness classes that meet the needs and fitness levels of all participants, modifying routines as necessary.
  • Be prepared to teach both in the water and on deck.
  • Incorporate a variety of equipment, creative choreography, and current fitness techniques while applying knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and the effects of water resistance on participant movement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Health & Wellness and Aquatics programs, trends, and best practices and participate actively in required training opportunities and designated meetings.
  • Maintain professional and reliable class operations by arriving on time and in proper uniform, maintaining accurate attendance records, and notifying the supervisor and arranging appropriate coverage in the event of illness or an emergency.
  • Support the ongoing health and well-being of YMCA staff and members by performing other activities and duties as assigned.
