About The Position

The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking candidates who are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of Pennsylvania's residents and environment. Aquatic Biologist 2 is a rewarding opportunity to use your scientific knowledge to create positive change. You will work as part of our Conservation Restoration and Inspection (CRI) Section of the Southwest Region’s Waterways and Wetlands Program to conduct environmental investigations and protect waterways across an eight county region. This position conducts independent investigations, inspections, and environmental reviews to protect the natural aquatic resources that communities and wildlife depend on in the eight counties of Pennsylvania’s Southwest Region.

Requirements

  • One year as an Aquatic Biologist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional experience in aquatic biology or water pollution biology and a bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management, including or supplemented by six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle license.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform site visits to conduct complaint response, observe environmental conditions, and identify potential violations
  • Assess encroachments or obstructions in waterways and wetlands to determine permit needs and evaluate restoration or mitigation work
  • Coordinate and carry out aquatic wildlife surveys and ecological studies to understand impacts on water quality and the overall health of aquatic environments
  • Advise responsible parties on compliance steps, collaborate with partner agencies to resolve issues, and develop and conduct training for staff regarding wetland field investigations
  • Prepare detailed written reports, enter data into tracking systems, and maintain accurate records
  • Represent the Department in meetings, respond to questions from the public and local officials, and provide expert testimony in administrative conferences and court hearings
